ISOLATE THE "SYSTEM" TO IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM

The FOUR MAIN "SYSTEMS" at work in a band saw sharpener are:

1. HEAD LIFT
Including the cam, treadle and rocker arms

2. FEED MECHANISM
Including the cam, feed finger arm and back feed assembly

3. SAW SUPPORT
Including post brackets, filing clamp, saw carriage and the saw itself

4. GRINDING HEAD
Including arbor bearings, motor and grinding wheel

A good troubleshooting technique is to trace a problem back to one of these four "systems. Look for ways to isolate the "system" and inspect independently of the others.

MAKE YOUR ADJUSTMENTS ONE AT A TIME

Go back and reset-up your machine according to the instructions for initial set-up and installation. After you are certain the sharpener is properly set-up and aligned, make just one correction at a time and then inspect to see if the situation has improved or deteriorated. If several adjustments are made at once, the original problem could be fixed while a different problem is created.
