3. LOSING THE HOOK OR "OLD WHEEL - NEW WHEEL SYNDROME"

Older No.4 band saw sharpeners were especially susceptible to this problem of the hook angle reducing as the grinding wheel becomes smaller.

  1. Make sure the side of the grinding wheel next to the hook line is not dressed away during wheel shaping. Removing abrasive from this side of the grinding wheel will result in less hook.
  2. Check the grinding wheel arbor bearing alignment.
  3. The most frequent cause of this problem is worn rocker arm units and (on the No.4 sharpener only) pivot links that are too short. Refer to "NEW LONGER LINKS."
