5. GRINDING OUT OF SQUARE

Grinding out of square will result in a saw that leads in the cut.

1. Band saws can be ground out of square two different ways:

  • on the face
  • and on the back

These two ways are not related to one another. A saw can be square on the face, but not on the back or even out of square in one direction on the top and out of square in the opposite direction on the face.

2. A saw is ground square on the back if the center of the saw is directly under the center of the grinding wheel.

NOTE: Attempting to grind two different saw thicknesses on the same sharpener will result in one or the other (or both) of them being somewhat out of square on the back.

If absolutely necessary, a compromise might be to "split the difference", provided the difference is no more than one gauge.

3. The saw will be ground square on the face if the grinding wheel arbor is parallel to the saw. Refer to Aligning Center of Saw to Center of Arbor.
