A "Secret" Adjustment of ShapeUp Wheel Dressers

ShapeUp_Secret.gif (3259 bytes)

The ball handle (#1 in the sketch above) is attached to an adjusting screw that moves the diamond into the grinding wheel as the wheel is worn or dressed smaller.  It is crucial that there be minimal backlash, or end-play, in this ball handle/ screw assembly.
The split threaded collar (#2 in the sketch above) should be checked immediately after installing the ShapeUp and again every month or so.  The part should not allow the ball handle to be rotated freely more than 1/16 turn before the screw moves the diamond into (or away from) the grinding wheel.
If there is any tendency for the ShapeUp to pull the diamond into the grinding wheel, then this threaded collar (and the amount of "free play" in the ball handle/ screw assembly) should be inspected immediately.
To tighten the split threaded collar, loosen the locking screw in this collar, turn the collar on the threaded shaft until it is snug and then retighten the locking screw.
If the diamond continues to be pulled into the grinding wheel, then check the diamond for dulling.  The diamond should be rotated every day.  A brick or wheel-type dresser should be used to shape a brand new grinding wheel.  Only .001" (.025mm) of material should be removed from the grinding wheel with each pass of the diamond.
