PLASTIC CAMS INTRODUCED

In September of 1993, UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) plastic cams were introduced for the No. 4 and PRO-Filer band saw sharpeners.   After nearly a year of field testing, these cams have proven to run longer, smoother and quieter.

UHMW cams mount the same way as cast iron cams.  UHMW cams have both a timing hole and a timing mark.  A rod can be set  through the timing hole of both the wheel lift and feed cam of a set of UHMW cams.  When the rod is parallel to the cam shaft, the cams will be in time.  The timing mark must be used when more than one pair of cams is installed.  When timing cams, a small adjustment may be desired.  Very small differences in the actual tooth space from nominal, or wear in the sharpener may also require a slight adjustment in the timing of the cams.  For most tooth shapes, the grinding wheel should begin to lift just as the feed finger contacts the face of the saw tooth.
