The Batard Brigade greets the sunrise with Crater Lake in the background. The characteristic blue color of Americas deepest lake was hidden under a thick blanket of clouds. The fresh layer of snow had nearly prevented our reaching the lodge at the 7,100 ft (2165 meters) level on the rim of the volcanos caldera the night before.

The Brigade discusses saws with filing supervisor Larry Averett at one end of the Crown Pacifics spacious Stellite tipping center at Gilchrist, Oregon. Band filer Craig Hansen grinds just the Stellite faces and tops of one of the band saws on a No. 4 Armstrong sharpener at the right of the photo. The saws are maintained between tippings in another file room.
