When the decision was made to build a new dual side grinder, the first thing we did was listen. We listened to our distributors and we listened to you, saw filers and mill managers.

Armstrong’s EQUALIZER was designed and built, component by component, feature by feature, based on your requirements and your "wish list." We committed ourselves to build a machine that not only fulfilled your requirements, but offered a multitude of features to make side grinding as quick, precise and simple as possible.

PRECISION

You said, "Give us a side grinder that lets us gain the most from today’s high precision, high recovering sawing." Done! The NO.90 EQUALIZER repeatedly turns out saws, accurate to +/- .001".

POWER

You want a machine with unmatched speed and power. Two motors generating 6 h.p. make the EQUALIZER the most powerful machine available today. Capable of grinding 20 teeth per minute, the EQUALIZER can also grind as few as 2 teeth per minute for "single pass" operation.

PERFORMANCE

"Our shop demands reliability, ease of use and versatility," you told us. We listened! And added a digital readout, moveable control console, built in setup gauges, quick change wheel hubs and a measuring station. Band, circular or sash gang saws can be side ground with or without full flood cooling. The EQUALIZER’s versatility includes running in the same loop with a band saw sharpener as well as independently.

For over 80 years you’ve relied on Armstrong for top quality saw maintenance equipment. We are proud to bring you the newest and best in dual side grinding technology – THE NO. 90 EQUALIZER.

Armstrong Equalizer
BUILT FOR POWER AND DURABILITY
  • TWO ELECTRIC MOTORS GENERATE A TOTAL OF 6 H.P.
One 3 h.p. motor provides power to advance and clamp even the largest band saws. A separate 3 h.p. motor allows for heavy stock removal rates without losing RPM.
  • HEAVY-DUTY CONSTRUCTION
Massive cast iron components, roller and ball bearing slides and carbide wear parts assure reliable, accurate performance for many years. All main components are anchored onto a 400 lb. Cast iron support for absolute rigidity and resistance to mill vibration.
  • PRECISION ROLLER BEARING SLIDES
Smooth friction-free movement and dependable operation of vertical lift and horizontal wheel positioning.
  • ALLEN-BRADLEY CONTROLS ALL OPERATIONS
Many years of trouble-free performance in the sawmill has earned the Allen-Bradley PLC a reputation for reliability.
  • HEAVY-DUTY GRINDING WHEEL ARBORS
Standard on the EQUALIZER, 6000 RPM is ideal for most grinding applications, offering cool, precise operation. With the optional pulley and belt arrangement, operators can select other speeds up to 9000 RPM.
  • AMERICAN MADE AND LOCALLY SERVICED
The EQUALIZER is backed by Armstrong and a team of local stocking distributor/service centers. Each machine includes on-site start up assistance and a fully illustrated operations manual. Spare parts and technical support are always just a phone call away.

BUILT FOR EASY SET-UP AND OPERATION

  • DIGITAL READOUTS (DROs) FOR QUICK, ACCURATE WHEEL POSITIONING
The DROs instantly display the exact position of the grinding wheel to one tenth of a thousandth of an inch (.0001") or one thousandth of a millimeter (.001mm). Digital Readouts allow for faster set-ups and fine adjustments with minimal calculations.
  • INDEPENDENT BALL SCREWS TO DRIVE GRINDING WHEELS
Fast, accurate wheel positioning with zero backlash and no tendency for the wheels to "drift".
  • BUILT IN SET-UP GAUGES
Quick and easy set-up of saw height, tangential angles (10 to 0 ), and radial angles (5 to 0 ).
  • MOVEABLE CONTROL CONSOLE
All electronic controls are easily accessible on this swing-arm control console. Operators can select MANUAL mode for set-up or AUTOMATIC, where built-in sensors monitor each step of the grinding process.
  • BUILT IN MEASURING STATION
Immediately "down stream" from the grinding area, kerf and side clearance are easily monitored. The measuring station provides a solid support for accurate readings on both sides of a band saw.
  • QUICK CHANGE GRINDING WHEEL HUBS
Grinding wheels are quickly mounted onto the hubs. Complete wheel-hub assemblies are easily changed as required for grinding a variety of saws.
  • HYDRAULIC SPEED CONTROL
Speed controls for tooth advancement, grinding wheel travel and saw positioning are easily accessible and quickly adjusted. Capable of grinding 20 teeth per minute, the EQUALIZER can also be slowed to grind as little as 2 teeth per minute for "single pass" operation.

BUILT FOR VERSATILITY

  • HEAVY-DUTY, DIRECT-DRIVE FEED MECHANISM
The EQUALIZER’s feed finger mechanism features a cushioned end stop and screw adjusted positioning for precise movement of any saw – including double-cut bands, thin gauge circular rip and small band resaws.
  • POWERED SAW LIFT
For quick and easy positioning of the saw. The automatic post bracket raises and lowers with the saw carriage to maintain the level position of the saw.
  • TWO-STAGE SAW CLAMP
"Light" pressure is applied while the saw is advanced, holding the saw in line and preventing the tooth from moving beyond the grinding position. Full pressure is exerted to "lock" the saw firmly in place during the grinding process. A matched face plate and saw clamp, each 12" long X 3" deep, accurately position even heavy band saws with lots of tension.
  • INDEPENDENT OPERATION OR IN THE SAME LOOP WITH A BAND SAW SHARPENER
The EQUALIZER can be set up as an independent machine center or as the "back feed" for a band saw sharpener. This feature offers larger mills maximum productivity and reduced equipment costs and smaller mills maximum use of limited space.
  • FULL FLOOD COOLING
A steady flow of coolant is directed onto the wheels and tip being ground for increased wheel life and cooler grinding. The operator also has the option of grinding dry.
